Can I transfer money to a beneficiary in another country even if it is not a bank that is affiliated with NAB?

Yes, as long as you have the correct SWIFT / BIC code or details of the bank you are wishing to transfer to, or the beneficiary bank address, the transaction can be made.

Can I set up a periodic or future dated international funds transfer?

Yes, you now also have the ability to set up periodic international funds transfers with the option to have your payment processed weekly, fortnightly, monthly or quarterly.

You can also select a date (up to 18 months) to send money overseas in the future. For both periodic and future dated international funds transfers, the foreign exchange rate at the time of the transaction will be applied and confirmed to you via secure email.

Why is my transfer stating "insufficient funds" when I have the correct amount of money in my account?

An international funds transfer has an associated fee in Internet Banking of

  • $0 if sending foreign currency
  • $30 if sending Australian Dollars

You need to have enough money to cover both this fee as well as your transaction amount.

Does the fee change according to how much I am transferring?

No, the fee is a flat fee charged per transaction.

Is there a limit on how many transactions I can make per day?

No, as long as the total of your International transfer transactions fall within your daily International transfer limit.

Is the fee included in my Pay anyone daily limit?

No, the international funds transfer fee will not be included in your daily limit.

Are fees charged by the overseas bank?

A majority of international banks levy processing charges which vary between banks and countries and could result in additional fees being charged. In most cases, NAB will pay overseas bank charges on your behalf. However, in some instances beyond NAB’s control, overseas banks will directly deduct these overseas bank charges from the money you send instead.

What should I know before sending money overseas?

  • You cannot send an International funds transfer to or from a credit card account.
  • There is a fee for international money transfers via NAB Internet Banking of $0 if sending foreign currency or $30 if sending Australian dollars.
  • The ability to perform international funds transfers through NAB Internet Banking will become available once you have registered for SMS security and have the Pay anyone facility enabled.
  • If you are exempt from SMS security will need to register for SMS security to be able to conduct an international funds transfer.
  • You can make as many transactions as long as the total of your transactions fall within your daily Pay anyone limit.

What if the country I am wishing to make a payment to is not in the list of beneficiary countries?

At this stage, you can conduct international funds transfers via Internet Banking to selected countries only. In order to transact to other countries, you will need to do this at a branch.

I have received an acknowledgement from NAB which says "processing". Does this mean there is a problem with my transaction?

No. If your international payment has been submitted to NAB successfully you will receive a "processing" acknowledgment. Once your transaction has been processed by NAB and sent to the international bank, you will receive a secure message to your Internet Banking mailbox with details of your transaction and a status of "paid", or "rejected". You can also view details of your transaction, including the status by selecting Payment list, under the Transfer & Pay menu and clicking on the transaction you wish to view.

What is the process of disputing or investigating an online international payment or funds transfer?

If something doesn’t look right, contact us through NAB Messaging in the NAB app or NAB Internet Banking. Tap the red chat icon to create a chat and lodge an international payments query, making sure to include the full details of the transaction.

What should I do if my beneficiary claims that they have not received the transferred funds?

An international funds transfer sent via NAB Internet Banking will usually reach the beneficiary's bank account within 72 hours; however, there may be other circumstances outside of our control which may also cause additional delays. If the beneficiary has not received the International Funds Transfer, you need to use secure Chat in NAB Internet Banking and send us the full details of the disputed transaction. The secure Chat team will then commence the dispute resolution process.

Will internet banking save the details of my transfer to use again?

You can choose to save the beneficiary details to use on future international transfers. In the acknowledgement screen, press the Add to my beneficiary list button. Enter a nickname for your beneficiary then press Next. Confirm the details and press Save.

You can also add a beneficiary in the Payee list' in the Transfer & Pay menu. Next time you perform an international funds transfer your beneficiaries will appear in a drop-down list in the application.

What is a SWIFT code?

SWIFT stands for Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunications. Also sometimes called Bank Identifier Code (BIC).
SWIFT code is the international standard used to identify a bank.

So if you want money to be transferred to your account from a person in another country, you need to give them a SWIFT code along with other details.
The preferred SWIFT code is VIC/TAS: NATAAU3303M.
NAB's SWIFT codes (also known as a bank identifier code or BIC) for all Australian states are:

  • NSW/ACT: NATAAU3302S
  • VIC/TAS: NATAAU3303M
  • QLD: NATAAU3304B
  • SA/NT: NATAAU3305A
  • WA: NATAAU3306P

You also need your BSB number for an electronic funds transfer from overseas. If you're looking for another bank's IBAN or SWIFT code, you should contact that bank directly.

What is a Bank Identification Code (BIC) Number?

A Bank Identifier Code (BIC) is an international standard for uniquely identifying banks worldwide. It is also known as a SWIFT address. A BIC consists of a combination of letters and numbers, either 8 or 11 characters. It identifies the bank's name, its country and the address of the store. When entering the beneficiary's bank, if you have been provided with its BIC, please insert it in the 'Beneficiary Bank SWIFT / BIC Code' field. If you do not know the BIC, you need to insert the full name of the beneficiary's bank, its full street address and its country in the relevant fields.

What is an International Bank Account Number (IBAN)?

IBAN stands for International Bank Account Number and is a European standard format for customers’ account numbers. It’s a combination of letters and numbers and the length varies from country to country.

About 40 countries have adopted the IBAN standard, mainly in Europe. Payments to these countries must include an IBAN in the ‘Beneficiary’s Account Number’ or ‘IBAN Number field’

An example of a United Kingdom IBAN follows:

GB 19 LOYD 3096 1700 7099 43

In this IBAN

  • GB is the country code
  • 19 is the check number
  • LOYD 3096 is the bank
  • 170070099 43 is the sort code and account number

How do I obtain an IBAN?

You should be able to obtain an IBAN from your beneficiary. Their bank can provide them with this upon request.

What are the cut-off times for international funds transfers?

To ensure the international funds transfer is processed and sent on the value date specified in the transfer, international funds transfers must be sent to NAB before the currency, country and end of day cut-off times. If a transfer is sent to NAB after any of the established cut-off times, NAB will process the transfer, however the value date of the transfer will be changed to the next business day.

International Funds Transfers received on a National public holiday, NSW public holiday, or on a Saturday or Sunday will not be processed until the next business day. The value date of the transfer will also be changed to the next business day.
